Target Group:  Frontline practitioners working with children and families in Birmingham

Purpose of the session

This session is for any frontline practitioner working with children, adults and families and has been created in response to questions raised by the wider workforce who are keen to recognise and understand the differences between destructive parental conflict and domestic abuse as well as some of the similarities and grey areas. Practitioners often worry about getting it wrong and the potential to make a situation worse though inadvertent collusion with a perpetrator of abuse and/or failing to recognise the signs of domestic abuse. The session explores the language and words used to describe both parental conflict and domestic abuse, the critical difference between the two concerns, why and how they look different from a survivor perspective, what destructive and constructive conflict looks like, coercive control, local risk assessment, safety planning. The session explores high risk factors to harm we should be aware of for such as non-fatal strangulation.  We will also explore local pathways and what do if we are concerned about either domestic abuse or parental conflict.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session participants will.

  • recognise that there is a difference between parental conflict and domestic abuse.
  • understand the difference between constructive and destructive conflict.
  • recognise how parental conflict and domestic abuse are experienced by those involved.
  • understand the different language used when we talk about parental conflict and domestic abuse.
  • understand pathways to local risk assessment and support/provision for domestic abuse or parental conflict.

Following completion of the workshop you will be required to complete an evaluation following which you will be able to download a certificate of attendance.

Instructions for delegates attending virtual courses

We have been working hard to ensure that the on-line training experience is beneficial and supportive for everyone involved. We want to ensure you have the optimum learning experience so there are a few things to consider before the online training event.

The training will be an interactive session and we request that where possible that you have your cameras on for the session. If you have issues with your laptop please contact Service Birmingham to try to resolve the issue before the training day.

Virtual Platforms - Training will be conducted on the Microsoft Teams. You will need to make sure you have access to this platform before the training day, preferably on a computer or laptop. We recommend that, you pop the link provided into your calendar for the date and time ofyour session so we can all begin on time,  Click on the link 10 minutes before the training is due to begin. There will be a waiting room and the trainer will let you into the session.

Cameras - We would prefer learners to have their cameras on during the training, this makes interaction and participation easier, as well as strengthening the group dynamics. It also helps to be able to see others’ non-verbal social cues, like eye contact and mouth movements, to know when is the right time to speak and interact with others in the training group.

Microphones - We would prefer you to have your microphones off when you aren’t making a direct contribution to the group. This is due to background noise or, sometimes, when everyone is unmuted it can cause echoing and/or disruption to video Then you can just unmute as and when you need to.

It is very important that if you book a place but later cannot attend that you cancel your place at least 14 days before the event date.  This will enable the place to be offered to delegates on the waiting list and will avoid any non attendance charges being made to your organisation.  Cancellation requests outside of 14 days should be emailed to bscp.contactus@birminghamchildrenstrust.co.uk;

If a colleague is able to take your place then let BSCP Contact us know the name and email address of your colleague).
