Creating Father-Inclusive Health and Family Services to Reduce Parental Conflict

Target Group:  Suitable for all staff in services working with children and families, including early years, family support, social care, health and maternity, education and specialist services, including the voluntary sector.

This interactive, evidence-based training course provides participants with knowledge and strategies to work productively with fathers in the families in your service, from conception onwards. This course will help you develop a father-inclusive approach to supporting couple and parental relationships, drawing on a strong evidence base and informed by our wide understanding of ‘what works’.

Key outcomes

  • Knowledge of impacts fathers have on child development, mothers, and mothers parenting behaviour and how fatherhood impacts on men.
  • Greater understanding of the barriers and opportunities to father-engagement in services
  • Increased awareness of couple conflict and conflicted communication and its impact on children
  • Action planning for father-inclusive services

Training Content

  • Unpick the personal and cultural issues which shape perceptions of men/fathers
  • Explore the research evidence base on fathers’ impact on children, mothers and how parenthood impacts on men themselves
  • Assess fathers’ engagement with services, consider what can influence our engagement with them and identify areas of focus
  • Understand the spectrum of couple conflict, and its impact on the child.
  • Explore what conflicted/cooperative couple communication looks like, how conflict can be expressed and how we can support couples.
  • Examine relevant case studies, useful tools and best-practice to support action planning to embed father-inclusive practice in your service.

This session will include presentations, large and small group work and Q&A opportunities. Participants will receive post-course resources to support them to continue and develop their practice.
