Safeguarding Children and Young People Training:  Level 3/Health 3

Understanding the Impact of Parental Mental Health Conditions on Parenting and Children.

You are warmly invited to attend this training which is being delivered by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust in partnership with Birmingham Safeguarding Childrens Partnership. This is mandatory safeguarding training designed predominantly for mental health practitioners within the Trust itself but five spaces are made available on each course for multi-agency colleagues. In total there will be 25 delegates on each course.

Target Group

The course is suitable for a range of practitioners at all levels who either have a particular interest in, or who come into contact with parents/carers who have mental health difficulties in their day to day work and where there may be child safeguarding concerns.

This course will be an opportunity for delegates to gain a greater understanding of the impact of parental mental ill-health on children and also to network with colleagues from across a range of services.

Learning Outcomes

  • We will be looking at the impact of mental health problems on the parent, and on children at different stages of their development, exploring risks and protective factors.
  • Developing an understanding of roles and responsibilities in safeguarding practice and how we can work better together to provide the best outcomes for children and families affected by poor parental mental health.
  • This is a highly interactive course with plenty of opportunities to learn from each other and discuss challenges in practice.
  • At the end of the course, delegates will have a deeper understanding of how mental health problems may affect children and families, an awareness of services to support children and families and how to respond to their needs using Right Help, right Time
