Understanding and Responding to Perpetrators of Domestic Abuse

Ethos informing this training:  Professionals working with the whole family often have less focus on the perpetrator of domestic abuse for many reasons.  It is not unusual to hear professionals focus on the non-abusive parent as opposed to focussing on the perpetrator and the active parenting choices they make.

Overall Aim: Nationally there is a drive to hold perpetrators accountable for their behaviours and the harm this causes to adults and children.  In order for professionals to consider accountability within a contextual framework, they need to feel confident about safe ways to engage the perpetrator in relation to safeguarding and child protection. This course presents a framework for the assessment of differing typologies of domestic abuse, along with best practice messages regarding safe and unsafe interventions so that professionals can apply an evidence based approach to responding to perpetrators of domestic abuse.

Delegates: professionals working with families experiencing domestic abuse whose role involves communication with perpetrators of domestic abuse. This may include social workers, team managers and family workers working within the ‘early help’ arena.

Learning Outcomes

• This course aims to enhance understanding of the challenges posed by perpetrators when assessing domestic abuse
• This course aims to increase understanding of the importance of identifying the themes of abusive behaviour and their possible motivation
• This course will focus on developing ways of identifying who is doing what to whom and with what consequences (typologies of violence)
• This course will encourage you to consider perpetrator tactics in relation to the risk of colluding with the perpetrator
• This course aims to increase confidence regarding the most effective working practices when seeking to engage perpetrators of domestic abuse
• This course aims to highlight the need to work within a context of monitoring risk and keeping safety at the focus of all practice
• This course will provide information re local/national local services for victims and perpetrators

For our virtual courses…

• Virtual Courses will take place via Microsoft Teams and - to a lesser extent – Zoom.
• Please read the course information, confirmations and any follow up emails carefully during and after your booking process, and follow the instructions for receiving or locating the link to the course. Virtual courses have been re-designed from their usual face to face format, and so some alterations such as the requirement to complete pre-course work (in some instances) are in place for you.
• If your organisation allows it, Microsoft Teams should be downloaded on your device and you should know how to use it prior to training.
• For staff who cannot download Zoom (eg Birmingham Children’s Trust Staff), it will not be necessary to download the Zoom program in order to attend the virtual session.”

When joining a Zoom call:

• Join the call using a browser (internet explorer or Edge) – you must not download the Zoom software  
• You must not transfer information to the group on the call (such as files etc.) via Zoom.
• If this is a new partner you are working with you may need to consider if attendees are required to complete a confidentiality agreement (this is separate from the use of Zoom etc.)

It is very important that if you book a place but later cannot attend that you cancel your place at least 5 days before the event date.  This will enable the place to be offered to delegates on the waiting list and will avoid any non attendance charges being made to your organisation.  Cancellation requests outside of 5 days should be emailed to bscp.contactus@birminghamchildrenstrust.co.uk;
